Partai Catur Jadul Nainggolan vs Ong Yok Hwa 1966

The Canberra Times dated 21 July 1966 put in a chess games between Indonesian player of the 60s. White was Nainggolan and black was Indonesian famous player Ong Yok Hwa aka Eddy Rusli. In this chess column by The Canberra Times, the editor Mautner, comments on the game which played on Pirc Defence. Black successfully penetrated White's centre because of the d-files weaknesses by White. It was reported that Ong Yok Hwa was Challenger Tournament winner of 1965, but not detailed on what "Challenger Tournament" it was.

Partai Catur Jadul Lajos Portisch vs Hamdan - Adelaide 1971

Trace of Indonesian chess player in Australia found in this chess column from The Canberra Times, 10 February 1971. The article titled "Crime and Punishment" wrote by George Stern highlight two chess games for its adventurous theme, the first game was Australian players John Alps vs Baker. Then the second game was Lajos Portisch vs Hamdan, from Indonesia. In this QGD game, Lajos Portisch simply get a nice mating pattern on King's side and the Indonesian player simply did not find the best defensive system against it. See this nice, rather instructive game by the Hungarian grandmaster.

The tournament in context was probably Australia Open 1971 held in Adelaide. The winner was Lajos Portisch by half point ahead Walter Browne. From the article the standing was:

Adelaide - Karlis Lidum Tournament / Australia Open 1971 (?)
Final Standing:
1. Lajos Portisch
2-4 Walter Browne
Florin Gheorgiu
Lothar Schmidt
5. Alexander Matanovic
Bachtiar (Indonesia)
Barber, Flatow, Fuller, Hay, Hamilton (Australia)

Alexey Dreev Won 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Champ 2013

He was leading through all rounds of the tournament, Alexey Dreev finally sealed the first place with full point ahead his competitors. Dreev won the 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship that held in this week, from 10th October to 17th October 2013, Jakarta. Dreev won the title undefeated.

In the final round (round 11), Dreev force to take a draw result against Gopal, who used a solid Gruenfeld line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bf4 O-O 6.Rc1 dxc4 7.e3, which almost draw in many games. In next board, Nigel Short come back from nowhere and pushed away Moiseenko's chances to win the first title. In the offbeat 1.e4 c5 2.b3! Sicilian, Short just dominated the play until endgame. Hence, Nigel awarded third place right behind Dreev and Moiseenko. This is happening because all other Nigel's competitors did not successful in adding more point, thus letting the ex-world champion challenger jump to the third place. There are about nine players on second place with 7.5/11, Alexander Moiseenko and Nigel Short are the best tie-break recipients.

For Indonesian players, GM Susanto Megaranto again is the only one pull himself as the highest point grabber. Susanto managed to get 7/11 second by GM Ardiansyah while IM Dede Lioe despite a solid middle round performances finished at 6/11. WGM Irene K. Sukandar is the highest score for Indonesian girl at 6/11 and Medina Aulia Warda just half point behind. Good news is most of the Indonesian players added more Elo rating point in this tournament.

3rd Indonesia Open was played 11 rounds on 7 days without rest day, it used a two rounds per day arrangement.

WGM Irene K. Sukandar memimpin perolehan nilai pecatur wanita Indonesia disusul calon WGM Medina Warda.
