Irene Kharisma Sukandar Won Asian Continental 2012

The time has come for the best Asian woman in chess now coming from Indonesia. In last round of Asian Continental Chess Championship 2012, WGM Irene K. Sukandar literally given the first prize in dramatic situation. This is happen in the women section, in round nine playing the white side, Irene played against IM Karavade Eesha. The situation is Irene need to win this game for catching up to her closest rival WGM Mary Ann Gomes, while Mary Ann need only a draw to win the tournament. Yesterday, Mary Ann Gomes defeated Irene in round eight and enter the last round with half point advantage. Despite the situation, Mary Ann Gomes can't handle the pressure from her round nine opponent WGM Tan Zhongyi. She surrendered in 48 moves games of a sharp Benoni game.

Irene played an aggresive game against IM Karavade Eesha. Karavade then blundered a big tactical shoot in move 27..Ne4?? and surrender immediately few moves ahead. For this win Irene now at 7/9, Mary Ann Gomes at 6.5/9 together with Tan Zhongyi and three other China female players. Irene started her campaign winning 4/4 earlier.

With this achievement Irene become the first Indonesian female player to reach Chess World Cup. Previously GM Megaranto Susanto and GM Utut Adianto were the only two who manage this achievement. Irene, born 20 years ago in Jakarta from a Christian faith family, received her WGM title four years ago. She spend few weeks playing in Australia before entering Asian Continental. In the Open section, GM Yu Yangyi emerged as the two players that reach 7/9 together with GM Parimarjan Negi. This will be announced later as the winner as we wait chess-result updating the table. In contrast, two Asian rising star GM Le Quang Liem and Wesley So played a moderate tournament and both finished 5/9.

Indonesian GM Megaranto Susanto finished the tournament 5/9, suffered two losses to Oliver Barbosa and Parimarjan Negi. He will drop 1.4 elo point. In contrast Irene will harvest 50+ elo rating, catapulted her into 2300+ player again.

The top five (5) from the 2012 Asian (Open) Championship shall qualify for the 2013 World Cup.
