World Cup Round 4-Pairing Comments

Round 3 result here.

Round 4 pairing is up, with lesser pairing mean more comments can be put in for each the pairing. Here some from chessgames.com’s member ezzy and some trivia I added (in blue color text).

Vachier Lagrave - Gelfand
What a year for Vachier-Lagrave. World junior champion and Biel international winner! has knocked out 2 Chinese players in the world cup, and his reward for a great year is a pairing with the top seed in the tournament Boris Gelfand. They both played 2 draws against each other at the Biel tournament this year.

Meanwhile, Gelfand also had a nice year, having winning the ACP World rapid cup, beating Svidler in final, although Svidler blunders help Gelfand clinched the title. The age different is span quite wide, so also a battle of generation here.

Grischuk - Jakovenko
Grischuk hasn't beat Jakovenko in classical chess, but he beat Jakovenko twice in the world blitz championship this year. Jakovenko therefore will NOT want this to go to tiebreak. Close call this one.

Both had been pushed until tiebreak yesterday so equal preparation.

Laznicka - Mamedyarov
Laznicka is the 61 seed and lowest rated player left in. He's playing 'out of his skin' in this tournament though, beating Morozevich 2-0 in the 2nd round. Another tough challenge against Mamedyarov who is the only player not yet to go to a tiebreak. They have met each other twice before with 1 draw and 1 win for Mamedyarov. Mamedyarov will be the favourite, but so was Morozevich.

Mame is doing a Fischer-like tournament so far, Wang Hao is his strongest opponent so far in term of rating.

Karjakin - Vitiugov
Only played each other once, and that was this year, and a 21 move draw.
Vitiugov seems to be a steadily improving 22 year old. This is his second world cup and usually qualifies through good performances in the European championships, where 3 years running he finished only 1/2pt behind the winners score.

I can't see further than Karjakin though, A major winner this year at Corus!

Gashimov - Caruana
First ever meeting for these two. Gashimov beat 2 Chinese players and Caruana knocked out 2 Cuban's on their way to 4th round. Caruana's route to the 4th round has been extremely impressive beating Bruzon, Dominguez and Alekseev. A fascinating match! Could this be a big breakthrough for another talented youngster?

And again with no intention to be little Gashimov achievement so far, his opponent rating are 2405, 2596 (Zhou) and 2628 (Li Chao) mean average is 2543. Caruana is his strongest test to advance to next round. Gashimov is luckiest in round 1 againt Li Chao, having in line of defeat but survived with a draw. In tie break, the Chinese join a “Smoking Company” with Wang Yue and give one round victory to Gashimov.

Bacrot - Ponomariov
The battle of 2 chess prodigies. They met at the U-12 European championships 1994.

Bacrot beat Ponomariov 2-0 in the 2007 world blitz championship. They drew both their games in the 2006 M-Tel masters. Ponomariov 1.5-0.5 against Bacrot at Biel 2004.

Anyones guess who wins this.

Bacrot last World Cup ended in third round by Karjakin. Yesterday he also enjoy a free game where Wang Yue late for his tie break game.

Shirov - Svidler
The big match of the round! They have played each other 26 times - Shirov leads 6-5 with 15 draws in all types of chess. Shirov beat Svidler at the Aerosvit tournament 2008, but since 2004 all their other games have been draws.
Svidler seems to be hanging on by a thread the last couple of matches. He needs to 'knuckle down' now though.

Pick your favourite.

I will favorite Shirov! Twice runner-up, in final he lost to Anand (2000) and Kamsky (2007). Reaching quarter final in 2002 (lost to Anand) and 1999 (lost to Nisipeanu). His best tournament this year is the MTel Master where he winning over Topalov, Carlsen, Ivanchuck etc. While Svidler is winning the Gibraltar 2009 but play much higher tournament than Shirov this year , like the FIDE Grandprix.

So - Malakhov
Wesley So is the 'headliner' in this tournament so far, knocking out, Guseinov, Ivanchuk and Kamsky. wow!!!! Wesley is causing great excitement around this website with the support from his army of fans. During this tournament I must admit to being a follower of Wesley, but I think the whole chess world is watching him now. He's having the tournament of his life, and good luck to the this young phenominal talent.

Malakhov knows what it's like to win big at a young age. He was the U-14 World champion. Malakhov is now a member of the 2700 club! That doesn't seem to phase Wesley though.

Although Malakhov seem not much known, he is rated above Kamsky. Compare to Ivanchuck’s inconsistency and Kamsky’s downfall this year, Malakhov is on the rising graphic. This is surely the toughest of So opponent so far. Many information tells that Malakhov is also have a non chess full time job, mean he is an “amateur”.

Wesley So is the only non-european participant now.

Age wise, Wesley So (b1993), Fabiano Caruana (b1992),Maxime VL (b1990), Sergey Karjakin (b1990). Gelfand is at 41 (b 1968), Shirov and Svidler is 37 and 33, while the rest in their 20s.

World Cup 2009-Round 3 Pairing Comments

Round 2 final result here.

Round 3

Gelfand - Polgar
Gelfand is enjoying his favorite status, playing a weaker opponent in two rounds. A good warm up but now his real challenge begin with Polgar as the next opponent. Compare to Polgar who only finished 2 classical game so far. Both met many times with statistic show Gelfand a positive score.

Lagrave - Yu Yangyi
Battle of youngster and more exciting this is like Asia vs Europea U20 player face off. They did not played in the recent World Junior at Argentina.

Jobava - Grischuk
Best from Georgia, Baadur “Baldur Gate” Jobava crushed Itturizaga in 30 moves Bogo Indian in round 2 while Grischuk eliminated “Drunken Master” who defended with Semi Slav yesterday. Strong pairing here.

Jakovenko – Areshchenko
Jakovenko comes with 2-0 against his Indian opponent while Areschenko from tie break. Both played a draw game before.

Bologan - Laznicka
Laznicka is the guy who upset Morozevich while Bologan finished Cheparinov by tie break.

Mamedyarov - Wang Hao
So far Mamedyarov having perfect score 4-0. I can’t find reference that they both played each other so both are into unknown territory.

Sakaev - Vitiugov
And Sakaev proved to be the solid player, eliminating Azeri Radjabov. His next challenger is Nikita Vitiugov whom he eliminated in 2007 world cup edition by tie break in round 1

Navara - Karjakin
Both spend another day for play off. Navara slip one rapid game to Shabalov due to surprised opening but then crushed Shaba 3.5-2.5 total. Database slightly favor Karjakin.

Li Chao - Gashimov
Gashimov enjoyed his high seed by playing easy opponent so far. But now he must take care of China men extra preparation for him. Looks like a team battle as Mamedyarov also facing the Chinese.

Caruana - Alekseev
Caruana eliminated two Cubans, Dominguez was losing on time in drawn position in tie break. Caruana is the last of Mr.President's recommended player. Both equal in the past.

Ponomariov - Motylev
And the former champion still heading well. Both met many times with Ponomariov leading.

Bacrot - Wang Yue
The highest seed from China. They both drawing each other from Chessgames database. Both games are the Petrov and Slav.

Svidler - Naiditsch
Naiditsch finished American dream Onischuk with a 20 moves miniature and enjoy his extra day for preparation. Svidler is now experienced more on how to handle a dark horse. They met many times with Svidler getting a plus point, but that’s when Naiditsch still a young boy. Still big chance for Svidler.

Tomashevsky – Shirov
When all the favorite seems fade away from the tournament turn out Shirov also want to maximalized his trip to Siberia by playing in tie break. Winning the tie break 3-0 Shirov is to challenge Tomashevsky who hardly get rid of Khalifman. They both met in 2008 with draw result.

Kamsky - So
Wesley So is trying to redefined the status “elite” in chess scene. His victory over Ivanchuck must be one of 2009 most successful chess story. Oppositely Kamsky still cold blood eliminating Antonio and Zhou Weiqi. Again this is the battle of favorite vs outsider, if So win, it will be remembered for a long time.. Meanwhile we do hope Chucky recovered soon.

Eljanov – Malakhov
Both “enjoyed” extra day exercise their rapid skill, they played a draw games in the past.

World Cup 2009-Round 2 pairing comments

Full round 1 result here.

Round 2 Chess World Cup pairing:
Gelfand, Boris (ISR) v Amonatov, Farrukh (TJK)
Boris Gelfand is the most lucky man, in game 2 where every underdogs play like 2012 is real, his opponent Obodchuck take a draw in 12 moves. Meanwhile real business is coming now with Amonatov of Tajikistan fame ready to challenge. Still Gelfand is the favorite here to go round 3.

Gashimov, Vugar (AZE) v Zhou, Jianchao (CHN)Zhou eliminated Raul Mamedov of Azeri, which is already a very good result. But now Gashimov ready to avenge for his cuontry men. Should be another fierce fighting here.

Morozevich, Alexander (RUS) v Laznicka, Viktor (CZE)Morozevich is beyond his Egyptian opponent in round 1, now Laznicka, whom I am not familiar with is going to test his luck against one of the world most interesting chess player.

Radjabov, Teimour (AZE) v Sakaev, Konstantin (RUS)
Sakaev is pretty solid player, should be a good test for Radjabov’s KID.

Jakovenko, Dmitry (RUS) v Sandipan, Chanda (IND)
Sandipan eliminated Kobalia, which is a good result, but can he survive Jakovenko, who is now Russian very top rating player.

Shirov, Alexei (ESP) v Fedorchuk, Sergey A. (UKR)
Fedorchuck give a shock by eliminating Sokolov, both Ivan and Shirov has a nasty chess playing style. This should give Shirov a little bit warning.

Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime (FRA) v Meier, Georg (GER)
Not sure about Meier but I think he is one of young generation from Georgia. A battle of youngster.

Alekseev, Evgeny (RUS) v Fressinet, Laurent (FRA)Alekseev should still a favorite here, Fressinet survived his young opponent Sgujirov.

Wang, Hao (CHN) v Ganguly, Surya Shekhar (IND)
The first China vs India, Wang Hao is as strong as the other Wang surname.

Malakhov, Vladimir (RUS) v Smirin, Ilia (ISR)Ilia Smirin eliminate hard opponent Ehlvest while Malakov handle more lower rated opponent in Round 1. Smirin is 40 and Malakhov is in his great 20s.

Rublevsky, Sergei (RUS) v Areshchenko, Alexander (UKR)
Both go round 2 with 1.5 score and should be a solid pairing with any of two have equal chance.

Motylev, Alexander (RUS) v Najer, Evgeniy (RUS)
Vitiugov, Nikita (RUS) v Milos, Gilberto (BRA)

Nisipeanu, Liviu-Dieter (ROU) v J Polgar (Hun)

My favorite pairing this round. International wide Polgar is well known but who can denied Nisipeanu as a very strong player? Nisipeanu show great chess this year while Polgar is a bit lack of practice. Last tournament in Holland prove that Polgar not yet in her peak.

These pairing decided after the round 1 play off:
Yu Yangyi - Mateusz Bartel
Yu is an international sensation after beating top seed Movsesian. He will have a supported from his eliminated country men like Bu and Hou Yifan to prepare against Bartel. Should be a tough opponent for Bartel.

Alexander Grischuk - Vladislav Tkachiev
And Tkachiev survived another shock by Lee Quang Liem. Grischuk is enjoying 1 day off to face the “Drunken Master”.

Baadur Jobava - Eduardo Iturrizaga

Iturrizaga is another underdogs beating top seed Tiviakov.

Viktor Bologan - Ivan Cheparinov
Not a great show by Cheparinov, who need to go thru tie break before meeting Bologan. Again this is a nice pairing considering both are very strong name in chess.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov - Vadim Milov
Milov prove to be a surprise participant, replacing Ni Hua and now he is eliminating great talent from India. Mamedyarov enjoy extra day after beating Kosteniuk 2-0.

Sergey Karjakin - Artyom Timofeev
David Navara - Alexander Shabalov

Both are tired after the tie break, so equal preparation here.

Yannick Pelletier - Li Chao
Li Chao enjoy extra preparation as Pelletier’s last round opponent also a Chinese men which should be standing near Li Chao now showing his notes.

Leinier Domínguez - Fabiano Caruana
From Blitz tournament Dominguez not showing the strength he was, but take note that Smerdon preparation is excellent. Caruana must trivial to see another Latin American as his opponent. Great pairing.

Ruslan Ponomariov - Varuzhan Akobian

Longest tie break by Akobian to eliminated Tregubov but now more stronger opponent wait him.

Wang Yue - Boris Savchenko
Étienne Bacrot - Krishnan Sasikiran

Both eliminated a Dutch player.

Peter Svidler - Tomi Nyback
Strong challenge for Svidler. Nyback is showing strong game against Andreikin.

Arkadij Naiditsch - Alexander Onischuk

Great pairing.

Evgeny Tomashevsky - Alexander Khalifman - russian derby

Vassily Ivanchuk - Wesley SoThe hottest pairing. I imagine this round like this. Ivanchuck is just like Ivanchuck enjoying his tournament and extra day after an easy opponent. While So is like Rambo who just come out from his most important battle ever. Some questions : Would Ivanchuck wear a mask? And a million dolar question for So fans, what is the correct opening for So to be prepared?

Gata Kamsky - Zhou Weiqi

And yet another sensation by China’s Zhou Weiqi. This let away interesting pairing between Kamsky and Sutovsky, but now they both can be friend again to met Zhou.

Pavel Eljanov - Ernesto Inarkiev

Some statistic:
Russia - 27 players only 16 survived
USA - 10 players, 4 go thru (Onischuck, Kamsky, Akobian, Shabalov)
China - 9 players 6 survive,
India - 7 players , 3 still there
Egypt-6 players then were none

Europe - 46
Asia - 11 (Tajikistan,Phillipine, 3 indians, 6 china)
South America - 2
North America & Carribean - 5

Trivia:

Zhou Weiqi 周唯奇 is using 周 character as his surname. which is same as Zhou Jianchao 周健超. Zhou is from the Zhou Dynasty character.

and Wang Yue 王玥 and Wang Hao 王皓 share 王 character. Wang = king

Tricky is Yu Yangyi 余泱漪 which surname Yu 余 is to be pronounced as Yee like in Yeehaa! While Li Chao 李超 is straight forward.

Both Li Chao and Zhou Jianchao share the same name "超" Chao mean superb.

Gelfand is the first to go 2nd round by normal route (Polgar the first by w/o)

Akobian the last to go 2nd round.

Wesley So give the best tie break score 3-0 against Gadir Guseinov.

World Blitz Champion 2009 is Carlsen

Many best players are gathering in Moscow for 2009 Blitz Championship this week. The event followed the Tal Memorial 2009 was then won by the Mighty Magnus.

Several notes to mentioned :

On Day 1 top standing are : Anand, Carlsen and Karpov. So surprises were belong to Karpov who managed to defeated Carlsen.

Day 2 Carlsen already catch up with Anand for no.1 and Karjakin also make big loop into 3rd rank. Notable here are Kosteniuk defeating Polgar in 2nd bout (the first one won by Polgar), and in round 17 Carlsen down Anand.

Day 3 Carlsen started with Ponomariov defeating Carlsen, and Anand won against Svidler. This make a bit manuever in first position. Only after round 40 where Polgar defeated Anand where Carlsen secured first position by collecting 30.5 where Anand only 27 for 1 round spare.

Kosteniuk finished last, quite normal as suggested by her rating (the lowest). But her victims port folio quite impressive : Carlsen, Anand, Aronian, Morozevich and many else.

Report and new videos for Blitz Championship by Chessvibes. Report from Chessbase.

Surreal Sicilian November 2009

A Sicilian games is always my point of interest. Here is a compilation of up and down of the Sicilian games for Black and White in the last couple of a day. First is Magnus Carlsen become the anti and pro Sicilian. He defeated Ponomariov with White but against Leko he is the Black side. Games can be followed here :

Peter Leko - Magnus Carlsen, 0-1
Tal Memorial 2009 Round 9 - annotated by Ian Roger (Chessvibe)
(show chess board)(hide chess board)

Then from a less known tournament Magistral Ciutat de Barcelona, IM Daniel Alsina played a theorical Sicilian and put White's 6…Bd7 Rauzer in more homework. As suggested by Chessvibe opening expert, here the game :

Daniel Alsina - Alexey Dreev,1-0
Barcelona 2009
(show chess board)(hide chess board)

And then two miniture games from team event. It is always nice to see that Sicilian games still have some miniature to pointed out that still many rooms in this opening. The US Chess League has the most entertained team name such as Arizona Scorpions or Miami Sharks. The US Chess League logo also a nice one, similar to NBA logo but with a Knight in Red and Blue background. Compared to what usually apply in Europe where the team given a boring name like these.

Nakamura is playing in US Chess League. Perhaps this is the reason for his absent in World Blitz this week as everybody cried out why he is not been there. Here he was down by Julio Becerra in a 12 movers Sicilian.

One of the super strong tournament this year, the Tal Memorial 2009, won by Vladimir Kramnik. This is the second prestigious title won by Big Vlad. The other is being nos 1 in Dortmund Sparkassen this year. Also by gaining this title, chess fans is once again convinced that Kramnik still remains a powerful force in elite chess.

Other news is Magnus Carlsen finished his last two games with a draw, against Ponomariov and Leko. Both games swim in the sharp Sicilian. In Ponomariov, Carlsen is white and managed break the e pawn and launced a deadly attack by sacrified a Knight. In Black, Carlsen put White into hard Rook endgame and finally Leko can't answered his endgame problem. This two won made Carlsen to be no.1 in live rating.

Tal Memorial 2009 - Partai Catur Pembelaan Slav Ivanchuk - Gelfand

World Senior 2009 - Final

We got the Junior Champion last week and now show time for the Seniors. Played in Condino Italy, this year edition was a 13 rounds Swiss for men and 9 rounds for female. 16 GMs in Men category may say something about the strenght of the tournament. After final round the standing said it clear for GM Miso Cebalo from Croatia and GM Janis Klovans from Latvia to shared first. Miso is official in first place due to tie break. This is first senior title for Cebalo. For Klovans, he was also a winner in 1997 and 1999.

Main attraction for public chess is due to the participating of Larry C. Kaufman, winner of last year edition. Most stories and in sight of the tournament can be found in USCF website. Larry is famous to be the "mentor" of Rybka, and most of his success due to his "second", the Rybka itself. He shared third place with 7 others players with 8 point. Untitled Bo Jacobsen from Danmark also finished strong. Sources in internet stated Bo was once a Danmark champion.

World Cup 2009 - 1st Round with comments

Finally the biggest chess event this year, Chess World Cup 2009 Khanty-Mansiysk is coming in this month. First round pairing is predictable from the list of participant, only that Ni Hua is off (he will have to play in London in December) and replaced by Vadim Milov of Swiss. First round pairing, with my humble commentary on all 64 pairings:

1 GM Gelfand, Boris ISR - 128 IM Obodchuk, Andrei RUS
Should be an easy win by Gelfand.

2. GM Gashimov, Vugar AZE - 127 IM Sarwat, Walaa EGY
The Egypts are in high number participating here. But Gashimov should be on top of moral after bring his country to win the Euro'09 and reaching no.6 in latest rating.

3.GM Svidler, Peter RUS - 126 IM Hebert, Jean CAN
An unlucky day for the sole Canadian master. Jean will met the most Svidler, who is most likely a semifinalist.

4. GM Morozevich, Alexander RUS - 125 IM Abdel R., Khaled EGY
Also should be an easy win by Moro, except he jeopardised his game again.

5. GM Radjabov, Teimour AZE - 124 IM Ezat, Mohamed EGY
Again easy pairing for top seed and nightmare for the Egyptian master.

6. GM Ivanchuk, Vassily UKR - 123 GM Bezgodov, Alexei RUS
Of course everyone will favorite Ivanchuck.

7. GM Ponomariov, Ruslan UKR - 122 GM El Gindy, Essam EGY
Third Egyptian and now at least both are a GM title holder. Ponomariov is having less serious tournament the whole year.

8. GM Grischuk, Alexander RUS - 121 IM Sriram, Jha IND
Should be a though one for Grischuk but still from rating wise he is big favorite.
9. GM Jakovenko, Dmitry RUS - 120 GM Rizouk, Aimen ALG
Not sure about Rizouk from Algeria but Jakovenko is in top form ,playing in the world strongest event the whole year.

10. GM Wang, Yue CHN - 119 GM Kabanov, Nikolai RUS
Shall be interesting to see how Wang Yue can stand this Kabanoz, a nominee by Organizer.

11. GM Eljanov, Pavel UKR - 118 GM Al Sayed, Mohamad N. QAT
Top player from Qater but Eljanov is one of succesful Ukraine GM this year.

12. GM Karjakin, Sergey UKR - 117 GM Rodriguez Vila, Andres URU
Also should belong to Karjakin eventhough I am not sure how strong Rodriguez is.

13. GM Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar AZE - 116 GM Kosteniuk, Alexandra RUS
The first interesting pairing so far by two big names. Quite a pity pairing as it will be good for both to go thru 2nd round. Rating wise Shak should overcome Alexa, but at least she is Women Champion and played well this month. And I am always an Alex fan. Few days ago Shak managed to blitz out Alexa in Tal Blitz event.

14. GM Shirov, Alexei ESP - 115 GM Kunte, Abhijit IND
Also an interesting pairing, Shirov is in roller coaster period this year. To much fire may cause Shirov a round. Shirov had quite good record in this type of qualification, being runner up twice before losing to Anand and Kamsky.

15. GM Dominguez Perez, Leinier CUB - 114 GM Smerdon, David AUS
A bit unfortunely fo Smerdon, new GM from Aussie as Dominguez is also a very strong GM from New World.

16. GM Movsesian, Sergei SVK - 113 GM Yu, Yangyi CHN
A true test for Yu Yangyi who recently rocketed his rating and name the whole year. Movsesian should depends on his experience to defeated this youngster.

17. GM Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime FRA - 112 GM Yu, Shaoteng CHN
Yu Shaoteng is a bit not seen this year and Maxime should be on his high moral after winning the World Junior.

18 GM Alekseev, Evgeny RUS - 111 IM Pridorozhni, Aleksei RUS
Alekseev also having played in many strong event this year but let see who this Pridorozhni is, having get a wildcard from organizer.

19. GM Tomashevsky, Evgeny RUS - 110 GM Ivanov, Alexander USA
Tomashevsky will be a though opponent for this America GM.

20 GM Wang, Hao CHN - 109 GM Friedel, Joshua E USA
Maybe can called it a bit lucky opponent for Friedel as Wang Hao is widely known now. At least this is should be an interesting pairing. Joshua stated that he never played Wang before but known him personally.

21. GM Navara, David CZE - 108 GM Laylo, Darwin PHI
Navara is a potential player in the same generation like Radjabov but lately not much played in strong event. Laylo will need to works veryyyy hard as Navara is no way an easy opponent.

22. GM Malakhov, Vladimir RUS - 107 GM Amin, Bassem EGY
Malakhov is the rating wise higher. Not sure about this pairing as both name not familiar by me.

23. GM Bacrot, Etienne FRA - 106 GM Nijboer, Friso NED
Friso Nijboer is an adventurous player and this pairing should be interesting to see. Quite equal I think.

24. GM Rublevsky, Sergei RUS - 105 GM Morovic Fernandez, Ivan CHI
Also an interesting round here, Rublevsky is much more in experience as he is also in most of top European event this year.

25. GM Jobava, Baadur GEO - 104 IM Robson, Ray USA
Jobava should be very careful over Robson.A must see pairing as Robson's games now as hot as chilli crab.

26. GM Motylev, Alexander RUS - 103 GM Hess, Robert L USA
Robert Hess is a bit off the tournament after the US Champ, a hard day for him to face a name like Motylev.

27. GM Kamsky, Gata USA - 102 GM Antonio, Rogelio Jr PHI
Rather unfortunate for the Phillipine second contestant. Kamsky lost many point lately but very small possibility he is off in 1st round.

28. GM Vitiugov, Nikita RUS - 101 GM Gupta, Abhijeet IND
Not sure about Vitiugov but Gupta is a strong contestant from India.

29. GM Bologan, Viktor MDA - 100 GM Adly, Ahmed EGY
Last from Egypt. Adly is the junior champion but Bologan is the old lion.

30. GM Naiditsch, Arkadij GER - 99 GM Hou, Yifan CHN
Again another interesting boy vs girl pairing. Hard day for both, but I personally hope Hou can go thru Naiditsch.

31. GM Bu, Xiangzhi CHN - 98 GM Pelletier, Yannick SUI
The Swiss man is pretty solid as in recent team match, but Bu is also once an elite player.

32. GM Polgar, Judit HUN - 97 GM Pavasovic, Dusko SLO
High hope for Polgar to go through this unfamiliar name. The only female that have the highest possibility to go to 2nd round.

33. GM Nisipeanu, Liviu-Dieter ROU - 96 GM Lupulescu, Constantin ROU
Unlucky day for Roumania to see this pairing. Nisipeanu is always a great player and hopefully can overcome his countryman.

34. GM Sargissian, Gabriel ARM - 95 GM Li, Chao b CHN
Li Chao "B" is on the way to be a new super GM, a hard day for both of them.

35. GM Onischuk, Alexander USA - 94 GM Flores, Diego ARG
Onischuk was once a solid opponent and most likely can go thru this unfamiliar
Diego Flores of Argentina.

36. GM Cheparinov, Ivan BUL - 93 GM Kryvoruchko, Yuriy UKR
Cheparinov just back from a not so nice Euro '09 so he had something to prove by defeating this Ukraine GM.

37. GM Efimenko, Zahar UKR - 92 GM Milos, Gilberto BRA
Just become familiar to Efimenko after his match again Short, not sure about this pairing as Milos seems a tricky opponent.

38. GM Sutovsky, Emil ISR - 91 GM Zhou, Weiqi CHN
Just shared first in Chigorin memorail, Weiqi should be a tough test for Sutovsky. But by experience Sutovsky suppose to win this round.

39. GM Najer, Evgeniy RUS - 90 GM Ghaem Maghami, Ehsan IRI
A big challenge for Najer as Ghaem is one of most successful Asian player lately. Very interesting pairing.

40. GM Tiviakov, Sergei NED - 89 GM Iturrizaga, Eduardo VEN
Iturrizaga is a growing name from Latin America Venezuela and Tiviakov should be very careful on this round.

41. GM Areshchenko, Alexander UKR - 88 GM C. Jimenez, Fidel CUB
I'm become familiar with Areshchenko after his good performance in Jubilee Open this year. Can't comment more about the Cuba GM.

42. GM Sasikiran, Krishnan IND - 87 GM L’Ami, Erwin NED
Almost an equal pairing now, and this should be a tough game for both.

43. GM Smirin, Ilia ISR - 86 GM Ehlvest, Jaan USA
Both is likely to have played a lot of time, can't predict as it looks equal.Jaan Ehlvest beat Ilya Smirin 6 to 3, with 9 draws in Chessgames.com database.

44. GM Baklan, Vladimir UKR - 85 GM Shabalov, Alexander USA
Can Shabalov still keep on high competition? Not familiar with Ukraine GM but should be tough game for both.

45. GM Ganguly, Surya Shekhar IND - 84 GM Filippov, Anton UZB
Uzbekistan is another strong chess country but playing in Asia zone. A clash of Asian here.

46. GM Fier, Alexandr BRA - 83 GM Khalifman, Alexander RUS
And also, can Khalifman back into competitive chess? Now is the moment to at
least go to 2nd round Alex!

47. GM Fressinet, Laurent FRA - 82 GM Sjugirov, Sanan RUS
Fressinet is busy in family now. I have a strong feeling for Sjugirov, an underated young GM from Russia.

48. GM Meier, Georg GER - 81 GM Petrosian, Tigran L. ARM
Both name is very strong but I am more to Tigran to go thru this round.

49. GM Grachev, Boris RUS - 80 GM Bartel, Mateusz POL
And both name is not familiar, at least I have a round that I don't need to comment.

50. GM Caruana, Fabiano ITA - 79 GM Bruzon Batista, Lazaro CUB
1st test for Caruana who invited by FIDE president to enter the World Cup, but Bruzon is also a famous name from Cuba.

51. GM Sokolov, Ivan NED - 78 GM Fedorchuk, Sergey A. UKR
Always hope Sokolov can back to high chess and Fedorchuck is maybe the unlucky one to met this aggresive player.

52. GM Milov, Vadim SUI - 77 GM Negi, Parimarjan IND
A promising young GM , Negi should be a very hard opponent for Milov. Vadim Milov is replacing Ni Hua here. So maybe his preparation a bit rushy.

53. GM Timofeev, Artyom RUS - 76 GM Leitao, Rafael BRA
Again another challenger from Latin America and this time quite promosing for the Brazilian to go thru.

54. GM Inarkiev, Ernesto RUS - 75 GM Gustafsson, Jan GER
Inarkiev tried hard to be an elite GM lately, a solid pairing for Gustafsson.

55. GM Savchenko, Boris RUS - 74 GM Shulman, Yuri USA
The American always like black horsie in facing the Russian. Not sure who is this Savchenko and I am rooting for Yuri.

56. GM Kobalia, Mikhail RUS - 73 GM Sandipan, Chanda IND
Another strong Indian for the Russian, also not sure who is this Kobalia is.

57. GM Tkachiev, Vladislav FRA - 72 GM Le, Quang Liem VIE
They might be seeing each other in Calcutta this September , but perhaps at that time Tkachiev is not very much "focus". Le Quang Liem is a new very strong GM from Vietname and the only Vietnamese in this qualification.

58. GM Tregubov, Pavel V. RUS - 71 GM Akobian, Varuzhan USA
Akobian is a popular name from US, and again a match between US and Russian. A worthy opponent for this Russian guy.

59. GM So, Wesley PHI - 70 GM Guseinov, Gadir AZE
The last and strongest Phillipine contestant. Guseinov is also one of strong GM from Azeri, but most likely he is the "unlucky" guy to face the So, as his games should be now examined thousand times by Wesley's fan. As I also now know Guseinov's mostly played 1.e4 and defend many times with Sicilian and King Indian. Should be interesting to see this two 1.e4 player face off.

60. GM Granda Zuniga, Julio E PER - 69 GM Sakaev, Konstantin RUS
The legendary Granda Zuniga is back to chess and Sakaev should be working very hard to not be packed home early.

61. GM Laznicka, Viktor CZE - 68 GM Papaioannou, Ioannis GRE
Both is not familiar and the 2nd pairing that I have no favorite here.

62. GM Andreikin, Dmitry RUS - 67 GM Nyback, Tomi FIN
Andreikin is a strong under 20 player, but Nyback is a reputable strong player from the Scandinavian land. Interesting pairing again.

63. GM Mamedov, Rauf AZE - 66 GM Zhou, Jianchao CHN
Mamedov is part of winning team of Azeri. But player with CHN acronym always a tricky one.

64. GM Amonatov, Farrukh TJK - 65 GM Volkov, Sergey RUS
Last of equal pairing, Volkov should be more popular for me. The only Tajikistan GM.

The 3rd ASIAN Indoor Games happening in Vietname is including Chess and Xiangqi. Of course what we interested is in chess and here the concluded result, after compiled all the infos to be found in chess-result.com page.

The event is separately into three section. The first to be finished is the team format, which is a mix between two men and two women. Final round of 48th World Junior gave a dramatic won to top rated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave as a Gold medalist. Defeating GM Dmitry Andreikin he caught up with Sergei Zhigalko in a same point of 10.5. Zhigalko who having a great tournament were drew to last opponent Ivan Popov. Being inferior in tie break Zhigalko got the Silver and Bronze went to Michal Olszewski from Poland.

Of girl section, after a hard caught up by WIM Betul Yildiz, she must satisfy with Bronze as the Gold medal went to Indian's WGM Swaminathan Soumya. Silver went to Peruvian WIM Deysi Tello Cori, sibling of Jorge Cori. The three girls ended up same point but tie break decided above order.

Anand - Karpov 2009

Just before the real World Cup 2009 we still get one more important chess show. Mr. Anand, the current world champion, confidently defeated Mr. Karpov, former world champion, 3.5-0.5 . A no surprise result, Anand was known as ultra strong rapid player in his younger day and Karpov is now more like enjoying himself as a legend rather than as a chess player. Both of them played a friendly rapid match in Bastia and Ajaccio, both in Corsica island. Napoleon Bonaparte was born here as well.

The result goes :

Anand, Viswanathan-Karpov, Anatoly 1-0 D31 Semi-Slav Defence
Karpov, Anatoly-Anand, Viswanathan ½-½ D45 Anti-Meran Variations
Anand, Viswanathan-Karpov, Anatoly 1-0 D37 QGD 5.Bf4
Karpov, Anatoly-Anand, Viswanathan 0-1 E32 Nimzo Indian 4.Qc2

In accordance to the exhibition a serious tournament was held. The Corsica Masters Bastia was won by GM Ivan Sokolov. Ivan is the only 2600 players and won a tie break from Vladimir Malaniuk and Hicham Hamdouchi after all scored 7.5/9. The tournament is a 9 rounds swiss with 90m + 30 second addition per move for whole game. Here is Ivan Sokolov win in Nimzo indian against GM Yehuda Gruenfeld.
